JD garage diy plasma table

Post by ArcticMonkey »

Good afternoon friends
I am currently considering building the JD garage xl plasma table
The reviews on plans and design seem good
Has anyone on the forum actually built one and if so how did it go?
I have seen some videos on guys using/making different parts out of metal instead of 3d printed plastic and am wondering
what mods if any people have made and how it worked out.
thanks for your time

I built a 48"x 96" plasma table, the hard part was the electrical stuff, the breakout board and the switches to make the THC work plus the homing limits, Its just time consuming. but some of the best times I had figuring out all the problem you will encounter not impossible.

Hey guys thanks for the reply and encouragement
I have watched many hours so I know it's possible it's a matter of what I can do to make it the best I can
JD garage and the videos I see relating to their product seems to get great reviews and if I can pull it off for under $1500 for a table thet will hold a 4x8 sheet of steel i think would be a win win.

Are you planning to 3D print most of the parts? Do you already have a 3D printer?

Good morning David
I do not have a printer but I have some options here.
First I can buy the parts from jd
Second my neighbor has a 3d printing business so I can source them there for i would imagine a better price
Third which I am considering is to buy a 3d printer for the price of the parts from jd and expand my capabilities.
It really starts with me purchasing the plans so I can start pricing all the materials and come up with a build schedule.
Hopefully I can do that this week and get the ball rolling

I have watched them and they have good ideas, buy the newer plans as it has changes to the table, More supports for the axis trucks. And this have upgraded the electronics to a better computer/BOB chip. They also have THC mod as additional electronics, but it uses a pot for voltage selection.
I'm fairly sure they use GRBL software, similar to 3-D printers. It may be handy to buy their kit then location all the small parts your self, but that may be part of the fun too. If you want to buy a printer lean on you friend for info and instructions to get you started, great addition too. There is a lot of cross use of the software (CAD and CAM for learning). Just be sure your not taking to big a bit on the apple and loose interest. Not sure how well it will translate into a larger table, but after you can build a larger one and use it to cut the steel parts for it. And you will have learned a great deal as you go along. If you a heavy duty DIY Hobbyist like me you can add a router or laser to expand the table's use. :Yay :HaHa :HaHa :HaHa

Belt drives are not as good as gear rack and pinion . Hardened vee rails and hardened rollers are the way to acuraccy .
