Shadow Art

Post by BrayD »

These seem to be pretty popular. My sister in-law requested that I do a headless horseman for spooky season and it turned out great! 14ga sheet, came out to right around 24" tall.

Being new to plasma, this one checked a lot of boxes for me. Longest cut time, most pierces, etc. It was nerve wracking hitting cycle start, but it was fun watching it come together. Slowly gaining confidence in my machine's abilities.

SVG was purchased on Etsy and modified in Inkscape so I can't share, but wanted to share the result of the project!

Now that is super cool! The cut job looks mint, the finished product looks mint, and the shadow on the wall is awesome! Great job, thanks for posting :Like

I would suggest reversing the image so that ONLY the shape is projected onto the wall, perhaps using a red spotlight?

I am wondering how small the stencil can be, and still project a convincing image.

Looks great and the image is sharp. You could modify the bottom of the design to include a stake. If you paint it flat black, it helps a little with the reflection of the light off the piece. Some choose to build a box around it so you cant see the art piece itself.

I did one a couple weeks ago but have yet to find a good permanent lighting solution. The best lights I have found are single led tactical flashlights but I have already burned one up putting it on an external usb battery pack. What lighting did you use?

P.S. I thought at first you were projecting on MY building... :-)

Yep, there's a stake on it. I made one from more robust material and welded it on there. I also added a tab to hammer it in. Still bent the stake a bit on install. It hasn't rained here for weeks!

I've been experimenting with different light sources and came to the same conclusions as you. A single high powered LED seems to be best, but all of them that I have are in flashlight form. No novel solutions for that one.

Good looking building!

Those look great! I wonder if something like this would work for a light source?

Not sure if that would work well, but give it a try if you have a home depot close. Can always return. I think you need to be able to focus a bit more like a spot light. I cant tell if that model has multiple LEDS on the the wafer. I tried the one below without success.

Peaked my curiosity so I had to try as I had one of the husky lights in the shop. Sign has stakes on it but the ground is so hard I was afraid I was going to bend it, so I put the stakes through the holes of a milk crate.

The first picture looks a bit sharper to me, but both look pretty good. The light can power with extension cord and is outdoor rated, correct?

Does everyone on this forum have the same great taste in color for their metal buildings? :-)

The light I posted claims to be outdoor rated and has a 5ft cord to plug into an extension cord. I can’t take any credit for the building color, that was all my wife, but I do like it. Your friend has shared a link to a Home Depot product they think you would be interested in seeing.

My original post was of my brother's place. I opt'd for gray and red for my building :)

I've found the super cheap single LED flashlights to provide the best image, though they're lacking in brightness. I think this is 70 lumen. Images look pretty solid, but phones do pretty good in low light these days. I'm still looking for something better.

My door is 16' high, 20' wide.
