Assuming you have DesignEdge with Advanced Design:

Draw a rectangle the width you want the letters to be. Draw it tall enough that it overlaps both top and bottom by 1/8 inch or so. Select the text and use the Fit to Path tool (Ctrl-V) and click on that rectangle. It doesn't mater which option you choose, parallel or uniform is what I usually use. This will make the text fit that width and height. Delete the rectangle and make sure the text does in fact overlap OK for each letter. Smooth it all (select and press Ctrl-H then type .002 and press enter. This will clean up any stray nodes. Select it all and press Ctrl-B to Combine it to a single piece.

If there is an error or a problem, you may have a problem somewhere else on the letter. Before combining, detect intersections and fix any that aren't where the letters overlap.

I used a different method. I believe that Robert's method is more efficient.

Robert - I tried your method with and without using the Smooth tool. Why does the Combine tool produce a bad result if the drawing is not smoothed first? It has the same number of intersections before and after smoothing (using "D"). Thanks!
