making your own steel dyes

I have been experimenting with making my own dyes . Anyone have any helpful tips ?

You can get nice copper finish with a well diluted battery acid and copper sulphate.

The speckled effect is from a light sprinkle of copper sulphate when it's still wet, rinsed off fairly quick.
