Do they work ok without teeth cut in the gripping portion?
Can you share the dxf file?

It is just a personal opinion guys - I would not trust this plate dog in a VERTICAL lift to save my life because that could easily be what is at risk. I have used plate dogs for over 40 years and I have a nickname for them - bitch clamps. Because when you least want one like that not too, the bitch will come loose!

They are not for lifting vertically. They are horizontal lift dogs. There is no way you could even use them vertically. You put one on each side of the plate and connect them with a chain.

Now it makes sense why they don't have teeth.

For non verticle lifting using a pair of them then that design works very well. My head went to verticle when I saw the post.

Hello all, first time posting. I recently acquired a cnc plasma/router table designed and built by another member here "Weldtutor". His loss my gain! Still busy learning, but I thought I would contribute to this thread.
Attached are images for a horizontal plate lifter that I drew up in Solidworks. I have not built a set yet, but they are similar to standard plate lifts. I have created dxf's but am unsure about civil litigation. I purposely limited the jaw opening to 3/8" material so that when used in pairs the load would not exceed 1000 lbs (4 X 8 sheet of 3/" mild steel).
Any thoughts or concerns......

I have had a completely different experience. I have several different plate dogs that I regularly lift over 1000 lbs with. In 20 years, I have never had one slip. I use them for lifting 10 gauge wall panels, beams and tubing in the vertical position, full sheets of steel plate up to 1".

I've worked as a boilermaker fitter/welder for 38 years and have used my share of plate clamps, they can come loose if jared. Also if they aren't welded properly you could have problems. It's not worth the risk.Jim
