Has anyone tried using the scotch brite 4 1/2 angle grinder disks to clean up cold rolled 14 gauge ?

I have and if your just looking to surface finish the part it will do a nice job but pointed edges and dross will tear them up pretty quick and i found them to be too expensive to put up with that.

yes, But I mainly have usd them to polish stainless steel.
when you say "cleaning up" it is kinda vague.....

I have also used a "cup brush"wire wheel on a ginder for flat sheets which does a nice job too for taking off rust and paint.
It snags on edges a little though, but not enough to be a problem
a stiff twisted wire wheel on a ginder and on edge takes a lot of stuff off too. But the wires break off the wheel ocassionaly and can penetrate skin if ran too fast. I always wear safety glasses and a face shield when I run one of those.

Not sure wha U are "cleaning up" on 14 gauge though.....

Thanks , I use a wire wheel and flap disks also , the wire wheel gets what little dross is there , then I use the flap disk to clean it up before I bead blast , The flap is pretty aggressave , so I saw the scotch brites and was wondering if they would work , I have 50 school logos to make and they do have some sharp points on them so sounds like a no .

Give one a shot. They work pretty good to deburr as well, and would likely make light wok of the pointy metal.

I have two or three grinders set up all of the time. Maybe set up a few grinders and try the flap discs on the rough stuff and a schotch brite wheel on other areas that you want to make safer (sharp edges).

Also there are the old school sanding discs with a backer pad . 80 grit has been a go to of mine for medium work. 50 grit on for rough grinding. 120 grit on finish work. but the 120 grit wear down pretty fast

Dirtmotor I did the same search on Amazon and that is why I when to eBay for the screen shot. Sometimes is comes down to the words used or which words the search engine reacts to. I have used both when looking for something and did a copy and paste to a search on the other site to see who has the better deal. I used eBay more as they show the shipping up front, but amazon will give free shipping when you buy enough and are not in a rush. Ebay does show a better description for the items.

Tom - I like Amazon because they post user feedback for the products. If you have Amazon Prime, then probably 99% of the items are shipped for free. You do have to pay sales tax, same as on Ebay. Also - when the need arises returns are quicker and free with Amazon. Ebay not always so much. But if there is a better deal on Ebay - then I am happy to order from them as well.

I am not complaining about Amazon, I seen to be using they more lately. I did have a problem with the last VFD I ordered the shipper posted a tracking number and it never was shipped. I contacted Amazon and they had another vender ship and corrected the sale action, so all is good.

Following up , recieved the pads , I am using cold rolled 14 gauge . I thought it would save me time since I am makig 50 of the same thing , Sad to say it has not saved time .Still ended up doing a acid soak and flap disk .Main problem is the oil on the cold rolled . I can not seem to get it 100 percent off steel and it is causing defects in my powder coat , I am wiping steel then cutting out parts ,then acid soak, then a light flap disk , then tig welding a 3 foot stake on it then back to the flap disk to clean up welded area ,then a a acetone wipe down, then into blast cabinet ,then into oven for pre heat then out to cool then powdercoat and back into oven to bake , After all of that I still have some areas on some of them that has random areas where it appears like oil is bleading through , not sure what else I can try . The wheels that I bought work great except a black tar like substance comes out on parts and takes brake cleaner and a ton of elbow grease to remove . Sorry so wordy . any ideas on how I can shorten the process

I have used these sort of pads more for paint removal on automotive parts, and have never used them on cnc plasma cut parts. I have not had good luck with the acid dip either. I use a combination of several different grit flap disks followed by da sander with #80 paper.

I did cut a bunch of gutter brackets last year for a friend from 11ga. CR steel. The sheet was clean with no rust and I gave them to him in bare metal to use as is.

Wow Dirtmotor that some process you are doing to get a good finished product. Have you tried a pressure washer to clean the metal before you start any other process?? It could be the oil has gone deeper into the metal surface pours when processed at the mill. OHSA has removed many of the products that clean better .

Not this time , I think I will go back to hot roll , In hindsight I should have cleaned metal better .
