Error pops up when I upload Some DXF File

Post by Fastyankee »

So I noticed when I upload a DXF file in to Ink scape newest version of Inkscape this error pops up. See picture.
I will add when I see this I know the DXF file will need to be fixed because it will have broken detached lines that will need to be Node edited to join them. This is a file I downloaded from the free downloads on this site.

I appreciate any input on this I'm new to Inkscape and I'm coming from Enroute.

When you get files from somewhere they may not be in the format that Inkscape uses or can convert. Not all programs will use thee same DXF format/versions. Also the tools that were used to create the drawing may add other problems. There are posts here talking about passing a drawing through other software to clean then before going to Inkscape. Inkscape is more of a vector software that can save in DXF format but likes SVG better for importing. I have found the DXF files are never in the same scale when importing, this throws the stroke size way out there when enlarging the drawing to.

I'm finding that Inscape really works best in SVG which you just confirmed.
I need to looking in to what your eaying passing the DFX through another program.
I have been lost on what is a good program to use now the Enroute is dropping Enrout 6 support and now charging a yearly proscription.
Thanks

You may try this one, memory seems to be I did use this to convert, not sure about the scale of the finished file.

Also lightburn has some nice feathers that may help with manipulations of files for you ($60.) and you can use it to create drawings too.
Many tutorials for Lightburn on YouTube too.

I need to looking in to what your saying passing the DFX through another program.
Here is a good solution for processing your disjoined dxf files.

A single keystroke will link/join the file.

Tom - I tried Convertio on this file and it was a "no-go". Still lots of open paths. But your suggestion of using LightBurn is a good one as the have added a command to Link/Join using a single keystoke. This is a tool that I do not believe they had several years ago - but the LightBurn team is continuously adding new functionality based on user requests.

Thanks David, when I checked, after the post I found their conversion was not to the same scale as the original drawing :Sad .
Lightburn seems to do updates to add new features, I have not been doing to many original Drawing for new projects. But some of the tutorials on YouTube show some neat stuff.

Yes Tom - in addition to many broken paths (not linked/joined) the Convertio conversion was also very small, and not just by a factor of 1/25.4 (mm to inches). LightBurn is very responsive to user requests for new features. When I first used LightBurn, the did not have the capability to export as dxf. I asked them to add that feature and they did. It's a great program and is the one I will be using to run my laser engraver/cutter once I get it set up. I have the same one you do.
