You could use the outside offset and with a wide kerf size to have the overhang and use the same DXF file.

Would I need a different mask for each color applied to the bike?acourtjester wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 10:34 am You could use the outside offset and with a wide kerf size to have the overhang and use the same DXF file.

A page with all these bikes can be found at the address below. I will add to the page as I cut more bikes and paint them.

Yes or covering the base color when coloring separate parts. The DXF file can be broken down and small parts grouped for vinyl mask cutting.
Not quite the same as I cut these part separately for painting before mounting, but some parts could be cut as masking off similar to taping off.Just an idea in place of normal masking tape use. CNC drag knife vinyl cut masking would be more placement effective.

Re: CNC Plasma Cut Vintage Motorcycles
Bill - the same files could be used. Presumably you entered a value for your kerf width in the program you used to create your cut paths. Just use your original drawing file and either set kerf width value to zero before generating your cut paths, or leave them as is an check the box to cut "same as source" or "on path" as opposed to "right of parts".Tmate wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 10:31 amVery cool idea. Since I am only doing one-off stuff, I don't want to put as much work into designing a painting mask as I did into coming up with the basic design. Unfortunately, I doubt that the same dxf/G-code files could be used for both due to the kerf width discrepancy.acourtjester wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 9:55 am Or you could have one of these
and use oramask 813 stencil film
What software are you using to process your drawing files to create cut paths (g-code)? I have shown the settings page for Design Edge, which is what I use. Most software packages should have something similar.

David:
I'm using Flashcut software to generate the G-code. However, my table is outside, and has no components on it that react adversely to the weather here, as long as I keep it covered. I don't feel the need to come up with a 2nd table surface suitable for cutting vinyl, etc. I actually enjoy doing the 20 minutes or so of taping involved. It might be fun to come up with a vinyl cutting set-up, but then so would a jillion other potential projects I have in mind.
On another subject - When I'm tracing a photo, I can't put every internal shape or line exactly where it should be and still keep sufficient gaps between them. I create a circle with yellow fill that is .150" in diameter. Then I move it all around the shape and shift parts around slightly so that it will fit between all the lines and shapes. For whatever that's worth.
I appreciate your thoughts - keep them coming.

Re: CNC Plasma Cut Vintage Motorcycles
Bill - nice masking job on your Vincent! It looks good. You could most likely just lay a piece of mdf on top of your grates if you wanted to use a drag knife. Then just tape your paper down and cut away.
But I understand that the hand masking may be sort of therapeutic. I sometimes do a lot of masking when I paint actual full size cars, so I know the feeling.

Re: CNC Plasma Cut Vintage Motorcycles
Bill - I sometimes use a similar technique of creating a small circle and moving it around the drawing to check for fit. I normally use a circle of 0.060" diameter, just a bit larger than the cutting kerf width.Tmate wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 9:05 pm On another subject - When I'm tracing a photo, I can't put every internal shape or line exactly where it should be and still keep sufficient gaps between them. Here are some photos I found of one of my "masking projects" from a few years ago. This is actually my "hobby" Porsche 914 that I was restoring.

Nice rides David, to bad the 914 was not built for a longer time. At the time in Europe the 914 was considered a VW, Snobs
I have a piece plywood about 24" square with a similar size plate glass I place on my cutting grate for doing Drag knife and pen plotting work.

Re: CNC Plasma Cut Vintage Motorcycles
Tom - they built the 914 from 1970 thru 1976, so a seven year run. Not too bad. The factory 914-6 cars are the ones that are most sought after and bring the big bucks - usually around $100k. Yes - sold as the VW 914 in Europe, but badged as Porsche here in the US. Mine is a 1974 which originally had the 1.7 liter flat 4 cylinder engine. It currently has a Chevrolet V8 installed putting out around 400 HP. But it is very quiet and most folks think it is stock.
That's also a great idea about using a pane of glass on plywood for using your drag knife. I don't yet have a drag knife, so there is still much for me to learn about that aspect of cnc cuting.

I like the style of presentations for the bikes you have, both in mounts and color. I'm sure it will inspire others for things they do too. Some of the big truck or tool shapes wall art is one offhand.
