new toy Plate Roller
Finished another DIY tool for my shop, I wanted to made some large steel caster type wheels for a cart. So I built a Plate Roller I think its called a pyramid type 3 rollers. I made the roller from 2 DOM tubes telescoped on a 1" shaft. It has a 20 Ton bottle jack and chain drive for the 2 bottom rollers. The top roller is not driven and can be removed easily if needed. I don't think I would want to roll more then 1/4" steel and it is 13" wide. I test rolled a 1/4" X 2" and a 1/4" X 9" as shown in the pictures. The 2" was rolled to a ID of 5.5". If I were to roll and fire pit It would be done in 2 pieces rolled to 180 degrees. In the pictures you can see the short straight ends were the roll stops the rolled part is nice a smooth.

I'm guessing the block bearings weren't cheap. McMaster-Carr? Do you mind posting a parts list of the off the shelf stuff you had to source?

Re: new toy Plate Roller
Hi Sorry I did not see the request for parts info, I bought the bearing blocks, chain and sprockets from surplus center.
this is what I used but the second one would have been better to get closer.
https://www.surpluscenter.com/Brands/A- ... 5-16-P.axd
https://www.surpluscenter.com/New-Arriv ... 6-PA-S.axd
any other info need I can supply.

Does anyone have any idea of what HP an electric motor would have to be to power this. I have a rotator cuff tear and this looks like it could be tough.

Re: new toy Plate Roller
I wanted a larger turning wheel for the plate roller so this is what I constructed. It is 1" square tube 11 Ga wall rolled into a 48" diameter from a 13.5 foot length. It took many passes through the roller to form and then I clamped the 2 ends and made one cut with my band saw to get a smooth joint.

Re: new toy Plate Roller
I rolled some flat stock into wheel parts today the large ones are 1/4" X 2" and 10" in diameter and the small are 3/16" X 2" and 6" in diameter. I will be cutting the center parts in the morning. I rolled 2 halves then cut off the waste ends and welded them together. These are for a project I want to build, a rail road cart coffee table.

Re: new toy Plate Roller
I am planning on building a roller similar to yours, how did you determine how far apart your bottom rollers should be?
Yours seem to be fairly far apart, but some of the others I have seen online are much closer.
I am going to use 2-7/8" drill stem for my rollers, 35" long.
I'm wondering if I should just put them as close together as the pillow block bearings allow?
Do I really need the extra sprocket below? could I not wrap chain around just the 2 bottom roller sprockets? Or is it just for tightening the chain?

Re: new toy Plate Roller
The closer the 2 bottom roller are the more force it takes to form the metal and also effects the amount of waste at both ends of the metal being formed. You can see that in the pictures above. I put the extra sprocket to be able to move the bottom rollers in or out if I wanted to (which I have not done) you could just loop around the sprockets I don't know if slop in the chain will cause a problem with the rolling action.
pictures show the finished larger wheels ( still need paint or powder coat) and one of the attaching brackets.

Re: new toy Plate Roller
I'm thinking of building something similar. What's the best type of metal to build the rollers out of? Tubing, round rod stock, stainless, Chromoly, tool steel, etc?

Re: new toy Plate Roller
I used DOM tubing from Speedy Metals.com they have true ID and OD dimension and you can order thick walls so no gaps when using one over another.
The attached image shows the 3 parts to each roller I think the OD is 2.250" This ended up with a solid roller.

That is some awesome work! I think I am going to start a roller project of my own and was looking at this thread. Did you press those stars into the metal? I have an idea of how you must have done it but that is a nice touch. Man, great work, im in awe.acourtjester wrote:My finished "Rail Road Luggage Cart" the reason I built the Plate roller.

Re: new toy Plate Roller
Yes sir pressed them in to the metal and bent it to make corner guards for the cart. I cut the star out then enlarged the star and cut the outer part to press the inner star into it. I did smooth out the edges so it had an easy transition with out tearing the metal.

Boy that is a great job you did on the plate roller. I to plan on building one for my shop. I've been looking for one on craigslist but haven't found one strong emough for what I want.
When you do find one they come with a pretty price.
I'm not too far from retirement and over the past years have been putting together a nice machine shop play shop. A good strong plate roller is what I need.
Is it possible to get some plans on that baby.
