Bad piercing 20mm stell with PMX105

Post by supertux »

Hi. At the last time i have a problems with my Hypertherm Powermax 105. Using new electrode + nozzle, 2 seconds is too low to pierce 20mm steel.
I don't know why. I removed case for cleaning.
... and saw oil stains:

Apparently, the oil oozes out of this bolt:

I unscrew the bolt, wrapped with tape and put in place:

Sorry for my bad English.

If you are getting oil, STOP!

Get an oil filter for your airlines. Also, check your compressor as the seals are probably leaking.

My compressor blew out the seals and flooded my machine with oil. The result was I had to take everything apart and clean. the sensor and the valve eventually stopped working. The air line in the torch was full of oil and had to be cleaned. Caused all kinds of cut problems and torch misfires.

This all happened in the middle of a two week job! Bought a PM105 to keep the job going and a new bigger compressor.

You're probably getting oil in your air lines. That picture looks like its the air supply line for your torch. That plug was probably leaking a little air, which wouldn't matter much, but getting oil in that line would matter. I bet the oil is the cause of your piercing problems.

As Jim colt told me when I had problems Call Hypertherm support and they will help you.

I cleaned mine by taking the parts out and cleaning what I could with a Q tip. Support told me to run a bottle of nitrogen thru the system which cleaned pretty much the rest of the oil out.

I would call them Monday morning for sure.

I will connect oil / water filtres soon. For now, i need to clean my pmx 105. If you will ask hypertherm support about how to do this, THANK YOU. I can't contact with support in my region.

Check your air compressor, that is the only way that oil will get into your lines. If you don't fix the problem the filters will only work for a short time before you have the same issue. Also, if you are putting that much oil in your lines it won't be long before your compressor is out of oil which will burn it up.

Problem with air compressor fixed and 1 filter installed. At this moment air 100% clean, input to pmx 8 bar.
But not cutting... Nozzle life time - 3 hard pierces and 1m of cut. Swirl a little oiled (why?). Maybe inside PMX oil, or ... a don't know.

You may still have oil in the system, it will work out over time. You cannot tell from this picture as this is the outside face of the nozzle. The electrode will better indicate air system contamination.

This picture tells me that you are piercing too close and/ or you do not have adequate pierce delay time. One pierce under the wrong conditions will make any plasma torch nozzle look like this one.

Look carefully at the pierce height, the cut height and the pierce delay time specs in the Powermax105 operators manual in the mechanized cut charts. Make sure you are using the machine torch shielded consumables. Make sure your machine is getting to the recommended pierce height....if not set a higher height to achieve the correct height. If your pierce delay time is not long enough.....molten metal will blow back on the nozzle.....increase the time if this is the case.

I processed over 16 tons of 20mm steel with current parameters. (tech maps)
I cleaned oiled valve (completely disassembled). For today i can't cut.
